Overview

Hertz is one of the world’s best-known vehicle rental companies. To support its electric vehicle offering across Europe, the company needed a reliable, scalable way to make public charging straightforward for rental customers while giving its teams consistent operational control. In early 2025, following a formal RFP, Hertz selected Driivz to support charging services across multiple European markets. The resulting eMobility service-provider operation links rental vehicles to an RFID charging fob, enabling drivers to access an extensive roaming ecosystem while Hertz manages vehicles, credentials, charging activity, and customer billing through a centralized platform.

Company Challenges

Replacing Hertz’s incumbent charging solution was time-critical: migration had to be completed within a strict window without interrupting service. Hertz needed more than basic roaming. It needed a platform that supports public charging and operations, multiple countries and roaming network partners, customer-facing services, and centralized reporting. It needed a provider that could meet the full functional, technical and operational brief while connecting rental operations to a multi-operator charging ecosystem, equipping country teams with practical management tools and providing a commercially sustainable foundation for continued EV adoption.

Solution

Following a rigorous procurement process, Hertz selected Driivz based on its comprehensive platform capabilities, ability to meet the critical delivery schedule, its strong partnership approach and overall value proposition.
At the heart of the solution is an integration between the Driivz platform and Plugsurfing, connecting Hertz customers to Plugsurfing’s extensive European roaming ecosystem, now representing approximately 1.2 million charging connectors on the platform. Each rental vehicle is represented in Driivz and paired with an RFID charging fob, enabling drivers to access participating public chargers as they travel. Hertz’s country teams can view charging locations, manage vehicles and drivers, issue or replace lost fobs, update assignments and review charging transactions from a centralized environment. Because Plugsurfing’s interface used an adapted protocol, the deployment required specialized professional services to design and implement middleware between Plugsurfing and Driivz. This bidirectional integration translates data between the two platforms and supports the exchange of charging-session records needed for operations and billing. Driivz coordinated the integrated service chain and continues to work with Hertz and Plugsurfing on operational improvements going forward.

Results

Hertz transitioned to the Driivz solution and, through the Plugsurfing integration, it offers approximately 1.2 million charging connectors on the platform to EV rental customers across Europe, significantly extending the reach of its charging service without having to operate those public chargers itself. The Driivz platform gives country teams a centralized way to manage vehicle-linked charging credentials, replace lost fobs, monitor charging activity and review transaction records. The middleware enables charging-session data to flow between Plugsurfing and Driivz, supporting monthly reconciliation and customer billing. For renters, eligible charging costs can be incorporated into one consolidated Hertz bill alongside the vehicle rental, helping simplify the EV journey. The implementation has also established a scalable operational foundation for continued EV adoption across multiple European markets. Beyond the migration, Driivz works with Hertz and Plugsurfing across the integrated service chain to investigate issues, refine processes and support evolving business needs.

Following a rigorous procurement process, Hertz selected Driivz based on its comprehensive platform capabilities, ability to meet the critical delivery schedule, its strong partnership approach and overall value proposition.
