Qu'est-ce qu'une passerelle de paiement ?
A payment gateway is a software application that allows eMobility service providers (EMSPs) to accept credit cards and other alternative payment methods. It enables the secure authorization and transfer of funds between the electric vehicle driver and the EV charging provider.
How do payment gateways work in an EV charging transaction?
Payment service providers (PSPs) facilitate payment transactions by transferring information between the eMobility service provider and the electric vehicle drivers, via a mobile app, web portal, or point-of-sale (POS) contactless devices. Payment gateway communications are automated, secured, and occur within a few seconds of initiation. They work as follows:
- conducteur du véhicule électrique conducteur la session de recharge.
- An authorization request is passed through the eMobility provider’s back-end operations platform, where it is submitted to the payment gateway.
- The payment gateway sends the request to the payment processor, which forwards it to the customer’s financial institution for authorization.
- L'autorisation est renvoyée à la plateforme opérationnelle, ce qui permet de lancer la facturation ; c'est ce qu'on appelle l'exécution.
- Une fois la transaction terminée, les communications sont lancées pour recevoir le paiement.
How do payment gateways differ?
Popular payment gateways include Braintree, Stripe, Adyen, Elavon, and Square, and these can vary across many factors.

Payment Gateway Differences |
|
| Factor | Description |
| Frais | Transaction and processing fees that impact margins |
| Volume de paiement minimum | Required transaction thresholds for using the gateway |
| Géolocalisation | Supported regions and compliance with local regulations |
| Devises | Ability to process payments in multiple currencies |
| Communication latency | Speed of authorization, impacting charging session start time |
| Modes de paiement acceptés | Support for credit cards, mobile wallets, subscriptions, etc. |
| Taux de conversion | Effectiveness in successfully authorizing and completing transactions |
How does an EV charging management system interact with payment gateways?
A charge point operator’s (CPO) EV charging management system integrates with payment gateways, which connect to payment terminals. For example, the system’s charge point management (CPMS) and billing software help perform critical tasks.
- Authorizing users
When users register for an EV charging service, they provide payment information, which the CPMS approves with the corresponding payment gateway. While the CPMS does not store the user’s credit card data, it does retain an identification token provided by the payment gateway in the driver’s account. When the driver sends the remote start request through an EMSP’s app with their driver identifier, the CPMS extracts the corresponding payment token and sends an authorization request to the payment gateway. If the user has the required minimum credit available defined by the CPMS, the payment gateway authorizes the user and charging can begin.
- Facilitating billing
After charging stops, the CPMS totals the accumulated meter readings for the charging session and accesses the payment gateway to take payment and issue the driver with an invoice (which the driver can retrieve through their account with the service provider). EV billing software accounts for various tariffs and subscription models to ensure the driver is charged accurately. - Maintaining security
Payment gateways encrypt sensitive data. By integrating with secure payment gateways, the billing software facilitates seamless fund transfers while maintaining rigorous transaction security. Automated detection of inaccurate or corrupted transaction data helps CPOs prevent revenue loss. Guarding against cyber threats to drivers and EV charging service providers helps preserve trust and ensure regulatory compliance.
Why is it important for EV charging management systems to support multiple gateways?
Payment gateways are not one-size-fits-all. If your EV charging management platform only supports one gateway, it significantly limits your freedom of choice. Integration with only a single payment gateway can hinder growth, as it prevents the acceptance of certain credit cards and currencies.
- Choose a payment service provider that suits not only their current needs but also their future needs to successfully scale.
- Continue with a current PSP. Therefore, they will not need to go through the entire validation process, including “Know-your-client” (KYC) and other required processes.
- Comply with an increasing number of standards and regulations across regions. Mandates like the EU’s Payment Services Directive and California’s pricing requirements set rules for secure transactions, transparent pricing, and accurate billing.
Driivz supports payment gateways
The Driivz platform simplifies payment processing by integrating with leading payment terminals such as Payter and Nayax, as well as multiple international payment gateways. These integrations enable operators to offer drivers a wide range of convenient payment options while meeting regional compliance requirements and open international standards. Within the Driivz Operator Portal, payment terminals are managed as distinct entities, allowing operators to monitor connectivity, troubleshoot issues, and ensure reliable availability. In addition, Driivz offers an extremely flexible billing engine that enables EV network operators to scale and monetize their networks through competitive business models tailored to a wide range of drivers.
For example, Driivz delivered its EV charging management system for the entire CEZ electromobility network.
- CEZ Group is one of the 10 largest energy companies in Europe.
- Driivz provided a comprehensive, end-to-end solution, including operations management, energy management, and a customer-facing mobile app.
- Driivz also deployed an EV charging billing solution that provides CEZ with full rating and billing capabilities, connected to their payment gateway (PayU).
